Accomplishments

Seed Replacement

The tribal farmers traditionally grow crops and vegetables. Awareness about new technologies and use of improved variety of seeds help improve the crop productivity. The line demonstration carried out in the field by VBKVK scientists help spread improved variety of seeds and good practices in the vicinity.

Up-grading non-descript goats

Due to the hilly terrain and small holdings, small ruminants are a major source of income during critical times. Most of the farmers keep 4-5 goats of non-descript bred, which are of low production potential, i.e. 150-200 ml milk/day and 8-9 kg body weight in 6 months. By introduction of Sirohi breed for up-grading non-descript goats, the income is doubled.

Vocational Training to Rural Youth for Para-vet and Gardner

Para-vets trained at VBKVK are working in the field of primary health care and artificial insemination. Companies like, India Zen Ltd., employ them for artificial insemination and other animal husbandry health care practices.
Rural youth and school drop-outs are trained in horticulture and nursery at VBKVK. They have been employed by different institutions, hotels and at mansions in and around Udaipur.

Income generation through vegetable cultivation

Farmers, especially farm women, have benefited through vegetable cultivation. The shift from perennial crop to vegetables has resulted in increase in income from Rs.15,000 per hectare to Rs.1,00,000 per hactare.

Drudgery reduction for Women

Distribution of drudgery reduction equipments, construction of smokeless stoves and bio-gas plants has resulted in drudgery reduction for village women.

Oestrus Synchronization

This technique uses hormonal protocol to treat infertile animals. It is different than the Ovsynch and Heatsynch protocol. The major difference is that the selection of hormone is based on ovarian palpation. It is successful with animals which haven't conceived due to infection in the genital tract. VBKVK, in technical collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry- Udaipur, took lead in training Veterinary officers of the district in 2009 and 2010.
Director, Animal Husbandry came to the trainings and assigned VBKVK the task to train 250 Veterinary officers of Rajasthan. During these trainings, Commissioner, AH, Government of India made a visit and emphasized to convert VBKVK into a national training centre for the cure of infertility. VBKVK established first infertility clinic for the farmers of Udaipur district. The present capacity of the clinic is 20 animals at a time, which may be increased up to 50 animals. Also, ATMA- Udaipur has released funds for 400 infertile animals. The results achieved range between 45% to 55%, which is more than the results achieved by A.I.
